We brought this set of six(6) Walker & Hall sterling silver zarfs (cup holders) and demitasse bone china? cups from England when we moved to America in the early 1970's (kept in a safe and unused ever since). The set is dated 1898 and has been in our family over 120yrs. It was handed down by our granny's parents (history noted below) and eventually to our mum, who has passed on and left us with more things than we have space for.
The set is in its original round cornered, wooden Walker & Hall case. The blue, felt, cup-rest base is outlined in a delicate white-rope cording. Beneath the base and inside the folding lid is a soft looking, puffy protective silk lining shown in photos.
Over the last 120yrs it seems some cups weren't fully set in the base, causing the lid's wood top to unglue when being pushed closed (see photos). It’s not damaged and can easily be re-glued.
The bone china cups have a well preserved, detailed gold gilt pattern around their collar, and gold leaf along the rim tops, too. Three of the cups have what look like hairline stains.
The cups are snug in their sterling silver zarf holders so I've not removed them (with my clumsy hands). As such, I'm not sure if any exciting 'cup maker' or 'bone china' markings exist on the cup undersides.
There aren't any chips or scratches on the cups that I can see, nor any worn gold leaf, which is remarkable considering their 124 year old age.
The sterling silver Zara’s appear in excellent condition, with no signs of repair, no dings/dents/marks/or re-bent areas. The handles are all straight and appear to never have been bent or straightened; again remarkable. They would, however, welcome a polish, unless you prefer the aged look for the warmth and charm it offers (I have been scolded for polishing some of the silver I
’ve recently sold). SILVER INFO : The underside of each zarf shows "Walker & Hall Sheffield England", along with the following Silver hallmarks... - Sheffield crown for Sheffield assay office - Sterling silver lion (gardant pose) - Date letter 'f' for year 1898 - Maker's mark of W&H within its traditional pennant (ie: Walker & Hall 1853-1920, not to be confused with present day Walker & Hall) SIZE : Zarfs: 2" tall x ~2" wide Cups: 2 1/2" tall x 2" wide Cup and zarf each weigh between 97-107 grams and hold approximately 3oz. SET HISTORY : Some fun history on this unique set: Granny's parents were Edward and Charlotte Hope. They lived in Caldy, Cheshire, England... on the Wirral peninsula across the River Mersey from Liverpool. Edward was the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Liverpool from 1894-1924. Charlotte's brother was Benjamin Bowring and the Mayor of Liverpool until 1894. It's wonderful to imagine how many dinners or eventful occasions this set enjoyed, let alone which guests attended and graciously sipped from them. I hope the new owner enjoys knowing and imagining at least some of the history. They would make a wonderful, rare, addition to a collection whether kept within their original W&H case or displayed for viewing pleasure. * Photos are part of the description, but PLEASE let me know if you would like additional information prior to purchase as sale is final, no returns * SHIPPING, etc: * I take great care in packaging for a safe delivery, and can typically ship a day or two after payment received * * Please message me for shipping locations other than Lower 48 contiguous US states * * I BELIEVE IT'S BEST TO SHIP THE CUPS REMOVED FROM THE CASE AND WRAPPED SEPARATELY in their own small boxes within a larger box along with the case. This would ensure no cup movement and provide double-wall protection. I share this as it may add a bit to shipping cost due to box size, etc. The only goal is to ship safely to you. * * I don't mark up shipping. eBay calculates it based on location, though I find it rarely exactly matches the post office amount. If it ends up you paid more for shipping than the actual cost, I'm happy to refund at your request the extra amount via PayPal or Vnmo * * I often use recycled packaging to reduce the impact of waste * * Local pickup is okay * Thank you.
